Badge Information

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the funeral badge?

Buddhist funeral badges, known as xiao (孝 - filial piety), are small, coloured cloth badges pinned to the sleeves of bereaved family members to signify their relationship to the deceased. These badges, often square-shaped, denote specific generations (children, grandchildren) and help organize the funeral procession.

How should I wear the funeral badge?

Pin the square cloth badge on the sleeve of your white t-shirt. If the loved-one is a male, badges are worn on the left arm. Otherwise, the badges are worn on the right arm.

What is the difference between Paternal and Maternal?

Paternal refers to relationships on the father's side of the family.

Maternal refers to relationships on the mother's side of the family.

When should I remove the badge?

You should remove the badge after you leave the wake/completion of the ceremony.

What if I'm not sure about my relationship?

If you're unsure about your relationship classification (especially for paternal vs maternal), it's best to consult with the funeral director or a family elder who can help clarify your relationship to the loved-one.
